IN THE LOOP

Hurricane Matthew has devastated Haiti, causing significant death and destruction in this already suffering region. As you may know, BCH has made several mission trips to Haiti over the past few years. Given the current dire circumstances, I wanted to provide you some background on BCH’s contributions to date and also let you know how you can help with current relief efforts.

For years, Haiti has been plagued by extreme poverty, deficient sanitation systems, poor nutrition and inadequate health services. Haiti’s health care facilities are severely underfunded and basic resources and supplies, such as running water, infection control, linens and medical supplies are scarce. The devastating earthquake in 2010 intensified this area’s significant problems.

Several BCH employees have volunteered to help Haiti in conjunction with the Colorado Haiti Project. Founded 26 years ago by three Episcopal priests, the Colorado Haiti Project works in direct partnership with the people of Petit Trou de Nippes to help create a more prosperous, healthier, educated and empowered population.

Since 2015, BCH volunteers have embarked on three mission trips to Haiti and have made a substantial positive impact on the community.

BCH volunteers have provided extensive education and training to health aides and nurses in the areas of population health, basic anatomy, first aid and more. Much needed equipment has been donated, including stethoscopes and thermometers, as well as basic first aid kits for community health workers. Volunteers also visited local hospitals and clinics, interviewed patients, and assessed health care facilities and how care is delivered in order to identify problems and help create conditions for improving health, safety and infrastructure in this struggling region.

Due to the hurricane, Haiti needs support now more than ever. The United Nations has described Hurricane Matthew as the most significant humanitarian crisis to threaten this region since the 2010 earthquake. Haiti has experienced catastrophic property damage and significant loss of livestock and crops.  There are growing concerns about food security and clean water.

If you’d like to support relief efforts, I encourage you to make a donation through the Colorado Haiti Project. Click here to donate or go to coloradohaitiproject.org to learn more.
